Transfer news and football gossip: Chelsea turn focus to Kai Havertz, Leicester target Ajax star as Chilwell replacement, Aubameyang set for new deal at Arsenal?
talkSPORT.com rounds up all the latest transfer news and football gossip from Wednesday’s papers and online…
Chelsea seem set to win the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, beating Liverpool to his signature. Simon Jordan told talkSPORT that money was not the only factor in the Reds deciding against the move. Jordan believes there were other mitigating factors including the balance of Jurgen Klopp’s dressing room and Liverpool’s future development programme. FULL STORY
Frank Lampard’s side appear to be in for a busy summer and also have their sights set on Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz. The Blues have been linked with Jadon Sancho but they believe he will join Manchester United. Their focus has turned to attacking midfielder Havertz, who has shined in the Bundesliga since its return. A £70m bid for the Germany ace is expected. (ESPN)
Not content with Hakim Ziyech, Werner and Havertz, the Blues have also been linked with Brentford’s Said Benrahma. The forward, 24, has scored 10 goals in the Championship this season and has been part of the much vaunted BMW attack. Brentford are still pushing for promotion this season and are fourth ahead of their final nine games of the campaign. (Guardian)
Arsenal are hoping their relationship with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s father will help them agree a new contract with the striker. Aubameyang will enter the final year of his current deal in the summer with the Gunners keen on an extension. The 30-year-old’s father, who is also his agent, could be the key to securing a new contract. (Telegraph)
Leicester are lining-up a bid for Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico as a possible replacement for Ben Chilwell. The England full-back has been linked with Man City and Chelsea and the Foxes are said to be preparing for life without him. Tagliafico, 27, has been earmarked as his successor. (Mirror)
Clubs around Europe will be on alert as RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano could be available in the summer. The 21-year-old’s contract expires in June 2021 but the Bundesliga club would rather cash in now than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months’ time. Arsenal have previously been linked with the centre-back. (Bild)
Manchester United are not willing to let Daniel James leave on loan, even if they sign Jadon Sancho this summer. The 22-year-old Welshman has made a reasonable impact at Old Trafford in his debut season but could see game time restricted if Sancho signs over the next few months. The Red Devils will not let the winger find regular football away from Old Trafford even if this happens, however. (Manchester Evening News)
Thiago Silva is set to be released by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season but the defender is determined to stay in Europe. The 35-year-old believes he can play at a top club for two more seasons. The Brazilian has won seven Ligue 1 titles in eight seasons with PSG. (ESPN)
