Nate Diaz hits out at UFC welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns on Fight Island
Nate Diaz tore into UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman for the opponent he will defend his title against.
Usman will fight Gilbert Burns on July 11 at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’.
Dana White announced the location of Fight Island and the first fights planned.
Diaz was not a fan of the matchup for the current champion and took to twitter to give his thoughts.
Diaz wrote: “This is what’s wrong with people claiming they’re fighters settling for less cause they know they’re not worth shit you should’ve fought the next guy in line not the guy who would take less cause he’s told too they’s why no one will remember you guys. This isn’t a title fight.”
Usman was expected to fight Jorge Masvidal, who beat Diaz last year to win the BMF belt, but talks broke down and led to Gamebred to publicly criticising the UFC and White.
Burns is the number one contender on the UFC rankings while Masvidal, whose rivalry with Usman meant a fight between the pair was much anticipated, is down at number three.
The Brazilian has not been at the top of the rankings for long but is on a six-fight win streak and beat Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley in his last two contests.
The welterweight clash will be one of three title fights at the first event on Fight Island – better known as Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
Alexander Volkanovski will defend the lightweight title against Max Holloway while Petr Yan and Jose Aldo will fight for the vacant bantamweight belt.
