NXT TakeOver: In Your House: Triple H explains why he decided Charlotte Flair wouldn’t be pinned despite losing NXT Women’s title to Io Shirai
At NXT TakeOver: In Your House, Charlotte Flair, Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley not only stole the show, but perhaps the Match of the Year thus far.
All three women laid it all on the line in the main event of a special throwback NXT Takeover and it would be Shirai that won her first ever title in WWE at the climax.
Flair originally won the belt from Ripley in one of the best modern era openers WrestleMania has seen back in April.
The Queen had carriedt he belt for three months, but with Shirai earning a chance at Flair shortly after her win and never getting a conclusion to their match, this triple-threat had been building.
The finish of this match saw Flair have Ripley in the Figure Eight, only for Shirai to hit a nasty looking moonsault from the top rope on a prone Ripley.
The Joshi Judas’ knees hit Ripley straight in the face and it was not a pretty landing.
However, that secured her the one-two-three as Ripley was unable to kick out due to being locked in Flair’s submission.
Immediately, fans began to question why Flair wasn’t the one who was pinned, however.
After all, either Shirai or Ripley getting a pin over a major star – and 12-time champion like Flair – would be a huge deal.
talkSPORT jumped on a media conference call with Triple H after the show and The Game explained the logic behind his thinking.
“For me it’s part of the long-term storytelling,” he said. “The difference between this and writing Game of Throne is, you write Game of Thrones and it happens.
“This is physical storytelling and things can happen over the next month, two months, three months, four months that change the directive.
“But, the intent is knowing where we’re going, how we want to get there and the storytelling to get there.
“That finish tonight was done the way it was done for a very specific reason. Some people will read into that and go, ‘Jesus, Charlotte can’t even get beat’ – first of all, the whole rhetoric of Charlotte Flair and her dad and her name and all of that is garbage.
“She works as hard as anybody I’ve ever seen, she’s a great performer and deserves everything she has ever got and has.
“This was done for a very specific reason, for storyline purposes, and hopefully if we get to tell the story we want to over the coming months, I think 3-4 months from now you’ll say I know exactly why they did the finish that they did.”
It seems Flair will be involved with NXT moving forward, but it’s going to take a few months before it plays out.
If it doesn’t end with Flair putting someone over cleanly, fans will not be happy it seems.
