Mike Tyson congratulates Cody Garbrandt after spectacular right hook KO of Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250

Cody Garbrandt managed to impress former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson with a spectacular knockout of Raphael Assuncao.

After three-and-a-half years of pain and frustration and three consecutive defeats, the former bantamweight champion unleashed a corker of a right hand to send Assuncao to sleep at UFC 250.

Those few people in attendance at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas had already witnessed a spectacular walk-off stoppage by Sean O’Malley, but ‘No Love’ managed to top that.

Garbrandt looked like a man possessed from the ring walk as his laser focus never shifted from Assuncao, refusing to let his emotions get the better of him.

Having lost twice to TJ Dillashaw and then to Pedro Munoz all via the way of knockout, controlled striking was the order of the day from new coach Mark Henry.

As the end of the second round, Garbrandt ducked under a lazy jab and loaded up on a huge right hand which detonated on Assuncao’s chin and sent the Brazilian face first to the canvas.

Referee Keith Peterson heard the horn blare out, but still stopped the fight correctly after a woozy Assuncao got back to his feet.

After re-instating his desire to get his title back, Garbrandt will check his phone and see a message  from Mike Tyson, who had a message on Twitter.

‘Iron Mike’ wrote: “Congrats Cody Garbrandt on your comeback knockout 2nite [sic].”

The bantamweight division is well and truly alive, with the vacant tile fight between Petr Yan and Jose Also already with a certified number one contender in Aljamain Sterling after his win over Corey Sandhagen.
