UPDATE: The issue has now been resolved

It’s one of the most popular mobile networks in the UK, but it seems that O2 is having issues this afternoon.

According to Down Detector, the issues started at around 12:09 BST, and are affecting many O2 customers across the UK.

While the reason for the outage remains unclear, of those who reported issues, 90% said they were having problems with their mobile phone, 7% with the network, and 1% with mobile internet.

O2 has said it’s aware of the issues, and that its technical teams are investigating.

An O2 spokesperson said: “We’re aware of an issue which might be affecting some customers making and receiving voice calls. Our technical teams are investigating. Data and text messages are not impacted. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

One user tweeted: “Working from home and relying entirely on phones is a great idea, right up until the mobile networks collapse and leave people unable to do their jobs.”

Another added: “Ah, can’t make a call and discover that O2 is down.. perfect for #lockdown working.”

And one joked: “Love Twitter for the simple fact if something is down or there’s anything I need to know about, it’s where EVERYONE will be talking about it #O2down.”

Today’s issues come shortly after O2 announced plans to potentially merge with Virgin Media.

Spanish firm Telefonica, which owns O2, confirmed that it was in talks with Liberty Global, which has owned Virgin Media since 2013.

The company said that the negotiations were ongoing and there was no guarantee they would reach a agreement.

“The process initiated by both parties is in a negotiation phase, not being able to guarantee, to this date, neither the precise terms nor the probability of its success,” Telefonica said.
