Premier League clubs 'accept it will be MONTHS before football resumes' so scale back players' training regimes

Premier League clubs have come to terms with the fact that football will not resume any time soon and will tell their players to scale back their individual training regimes, reports claim.

According to the Daily Mail, clubs will encourage players to partake in less rigorous pre-season-like training methods and combine rest with light exercise, with no return date for football resume in sight.

As it stands, Premier League stars are undergoing individual fitness regimes set up by their clubs when they anticipated the league would resume only a matter of weeks after it was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some clubs have even introduced the use of GPS watches to ensure players are following the instructions they have been given.

However, it has been three-and-a-half-weeks since the suspension of all football in England and with the spread of coronavirus showing no signs of slowing, there is a growing feeling amongst club chiefs that strict training instructions will need to be stopped or relaxed.

Last week, top flight officials confirmed that the competition is now on hold until it is ‘safe and appropriate’ to return.

And chief executive Richard Masters also warned that the suspension could cost the competition upwards of £1billion.

Masters said: “We face a £1billion loss, at least, if we fail to complete season 2019-20, and further losses going forward if the seriousness of the pandemic deepens and extends into the future.”
