Manchester United legend Paul Scholes reveals Ruud van Nistelrooy used to sulk on bus home if Arsenal’s Thierry Henry scored

Paul Scholes says his former Manchester United teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy used to sulk after games if Thierry Henry had scored.

The two strikers were locked in constant battles for the Premier League Golden Boot during the Dutchman’s five-year stint in England from 2001.

Arsenal legend Henry came out on top four times, while Van Nistelrooy won the award once with 25 goals in the 2002/03 season.

And United legend Scholes has revealed Van Nistelrooy was so determined to outscore Henry that it would affect his mood on the team bus after games.

The 11-time Premier League winner told the UTD Podcast: “I played No.10 with Ruud van Nistelrooy for a season and I loved it.

“He’s just a ruthless, ruthless goalscorer. He just lived for scoring goals.

“Whenever he did score or didn’t score, the first thing he would do when we got on the team bus after the game was see if Thierry Henry scored.

“If Thierry Henry had scored he wouldn’t talk to anybody for the full trip home because he was so engrossed in being the leading goalscorer, not just at United but in the league, in the world, everywhere.”

Man United legend Bryan Robson has high hopes for Bruno Fernandes, claiming he can be the new Paul Scholes!

Van Nistelrooy scored 95 goals in 150 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils before joining Real Madrid in 2006.

Scholes played with prolific forwards such as Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Dwight Yorke during his two spells at Old Trafford.

However, the legendary midfielder maintains Van Nistelrooy was the ‘best finisher’ of the lot.

Scholes added: “I loved the way he finished. Look, I played with some unbelievable centre-forwards. You are thinking [Andy] Cole, Yorke, [Teddy] Sheringham, [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer. There are loads. Van Persie I played with as well.

“There are some unbelievable goalscorers. But to me, Ruud was the best, he was the best finisher.”
