talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino has admitted he never envisaged seeing Wayne Rooney venture into coaching – and believes the Manchester United legend has developed into a football purist.
Rooney, who is currently a player-coach at Championship side Derby County, has expressed his desire to enter into management in the near future.
And that is something that Cascarino did not foresee happening when Rooney broke on to the scene as a fresh-faced teenager at Everton, hailing the development the former England captain has made over the years.
“Thinking of a young Wayne we’d have all gone there’s absolutely no chance of that happening [him becoming a manager]. No chance at all,” he told Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“But we look at Wayne now and he’s obviously a lot more experience and well travelled.
“You can see from his articles [Times columns] and the way he’s talking and what’s being said is that he’s grown to love and embrace the game.”
Several of Rooney’s former England team-mates, such as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, have already begun their management careers and Cascarino believes rubbing shoulders with those personnel has inspired Rooney.
He added: “He’s become a bit of a purist on football and that has really intrigued me.
“The raw talent of what Wayne was as a 17-year-old was incredible for us all to see, and it’s clear that the people he’s brushed shoulders with has made a mark on him.
“You can really see he does want to go down this road, so good luck to him.”
