Liverpool are European and world champions. But could they be denied the Premier League title?

Italy’s proposed trip to Ireland for their Six Nations clash on March 7 has had to be postponed on public health grounds and tournament chiefs are meeting on Monday to decide if other fixtures should fall to the escalating crisis.

As such, the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo are reportedly under serious threat. In the worst case scenario, the Premier League season would have to be cancelled as safety measures require a period of at least two months of inactivity to be observed.

According to The Sun, the 20 clubs in the division could be forced to schedule an emergency meeting to work out whether or not the season should be stopped now and points gained as of this moment would determine finishing positions.

As it stands, Norwich City, Watford and West Ham United would be relegated, but the key question at the other end of the table is whether or not Liverpool would be awarded the title.

The Reds are 22 points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City and 12 points away from a first championship title since 1990.

As it stands, there is not a precedent with how to deal with a situation like war or illness suspending a season – allowing clubs more freedom to make decisions fairly. For instance, clubs can be more lenient in their decision making with the current situation as opposed to if there had only been three games gone in the season.

The Premier League is waiting to hear from the Government. However, cancelling the season is seen as a very last resort stipulation.
