Copenhagen striker Michael Santos charged over alleged assault of police officer during wild celebrations against Celtic

Copenhagen striker Michael Santos has been charged with an alleged assault on a police officer during the scenes of wild celebrations as they dumped Celtic out the Europa League.

Television cameras captured the moment Santos, who opened the scoring, ran to celebrate with the travelling fans at Parkhead after Pep Biel fired Copenhagen 2-1 in front on the night.

With the cameras focused on Biel little can be seen of the incident, though one police officer clearly falls to the ground as Santos enters the area.

The Hoops crashed out of Europe after losing 4-2 on aggregate, with the Danes inflicting the first defeat on Neil Lennon’s side in 2020.

But the night was soured somewhat for the visitors after Police Scotland confirmed on Friday that Santos and a member of the Copenhagen staff were both charged in connection with an alleged assault.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Two men aged 26 and 42 were charged in connection with an alleged assault at Celtic Park last night. They have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Copenhagen released a statement concerning the incident, saying the elder individual charged is a steward of theirs.

“After Pep Biel’s 2-1-goal at Celtic Park there was turmoil in front of the FCK fan section after an official grabbed Pep Biel during the celebration,” it read.

“One of our stewards tried to prevent a clash and was led away and talked with Scottish police.

“Michael Santos also talked with the police, who subsequently have charged them both.

“They travelled home with the team, and we are now waiting to see if the Scottish police will pursue the case. We will co-operate if they want more information from the club.

“Those involved are not going to comment on the episode.”

The round-of-32 tie was finely balanced at 1-1 following last week’s first leg at the Parken stadium and the Premiership champions passed up several chances in a goalless first half in the second leg before helping the Danish side take the lead.

Santos, a late first-half substitute for Mikkel Kaufmann, took advantage of a fatal error in the 51st minute by Hoops defender Jozo Simunovic to fire the visitors ahead.

Odsonne Edouard pulled the tie level on the night and on aggregate as he netted from the penalty spot with only seven minutes remaining.

However, three minutes later midfielder Biel restored the visitors’ lead before striker Dame N’Doye, who scored last week, added a third in the 87th minute to seal a 3-1 win on the night and send Copenhagen through to the last 16.
