WWE Payback RESULTS: Every single title that was on the line changed hands, Sasha Banks and Bayley begin to unravel, Roman Reigns dazzles
Just one week after SummerSlam, WWE’s second biggest pay-per-view of the year, the company decided to put on another show in Payback.
WWE have loaded up the shows from the ThunderDome at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida and with a returning Roman Reigns, we were destined for fireworks.
WWE had plenty of titles on the line at Payback, so let’s get into the results.
Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott def. The IIconics
This wasn’t a number one contenders match for the Women’s Tag Team titles, but it really should have been.
The match went nine minutes and the women did a great job of showing out on the preshow. Riott and Morgan seem like they’re finally getting the push their talent and popularity warrants.
Both women have been pretty aimless since their respective returns to WWE TV but this could be the start of something good.
Bobby Lashley def. Apollo Crews (c) – United States Title match
Apollo Crews had managed to overcome MVP on a couple of occasions before he was subjected to the CEO of the Hurt Business, Bobby Lashley.
14 years after he last won the U.S. title, Lashley became the champion once more and he did it with the Full Lashley, his new submission manoeuvre.
Crews shined throughout this match. His standing moonsault is still sublime, the frog splash from the top rope would have been met with more praise in a world without Montez Ford and he actually lifted up the man mountain that is Lashley for a Gorilla Press at one point.
After suffering early in the match, Crews had a large portion of offence in the match, but ultimately Lashley put him away.
Interestingly, Crews attacked Lashley after when The Hurt Business was celebrating. So he is showing signs he might snap…
Big E def. Sheamus
This match was every bit as physical as you would have expected going in. Neither man really dictated the match, but you might say that Sheamus enjoyed a the closer falls and submissions leading to the finish.
Big E wasn’t truly working underneath – neither should a man of his talent and size, but there was damage done to his leg at several points that the commentators kept referencing.
At the second time of asking, Big E managed to hit his spear though the ropes. Once Sheamus tried going for the Brogue Kick, Big E countered with a power bomb and then again, at the second time of asking, he hit the Big Ending for the win.
Matt Riddle def. Baron Corbin
Corbin was intense from the jump here and he was set on just wearing out Matt Riddle.
The crux of the story is that King Corbin doesn’t believe that Riddle belongs on the main roster in WWE. Eventually, the more that Corbin beat Riddle down, the madder The Original Bro got.
For the most part, Corbin absolutely dominated. Riddle had a few moments where he got rolling with some kicks and he used some submissions in desperate situations.
Although Corbin had most of the match, some of the liver kicks Riddle laid in managed to add up and that led to Corbin’s demise. It made the opening for Riddle to land the BTS and then his top-rope finish for the 1-2-3.
Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler def. Bayley & Sasha Banks (c)
Nia Jax hurt her knee early on in this encounter and that would play a role throughout the match. Bayley and Sasha incessantly targeted and the tempo of the match was the fastest of the night thus far.
Down the final stretch, Shayna Baszler tagged in and managed to trap both Bayley and Banks in a submission at the same time!
Getting the Barracuda Clutch and a leg-lock at the same time was pretty amazing to see and the inventive finish really helped make this the match it was.
Keith Lee def. Randy Orton
Just like their first match on the last episode of RAW, there was early frustration from Randy Orton as he could not dominate the much larger Keith Lee.
A series of chops didn’t command Lee’s respect either, but eventually Orton went old school and laid in a chinlock. Anything Orton could do to halt Lee’s momentum, he did it.
As the action broke down, Orton went for an RKO and Lee countered with a Spirit Bomb. That was the end of the match right there after only six minutes and 40 seconds.
Dominik and Rey Mysterio def. Seth Rollins and Murphy
The Mysterios started the match hot by going right after Rollins and showing all the fire and aggression you’d expect given this feud has seen a man temporarily lose an eye!
Rey and Dominik ran the show until Rollins was able to get the better of the elder Mysterio and wear him down.
Eventually, Rey created an opening and gave his son the hot tag – but the tag was short lived as his crossbody from the top rope was caught and turned into a falcon arrow.
Rollins and Murphy continued to dictate the contest until Rey was able to get the hot-tag back in and his high-flying arsenal really came out.
The match broke down really fast after this and there was no tagging in and out anymore – just all out chaos. When Rollins wanted to BuckleBomb Rey into a kick from Murphy, Rey ducked out, Murphy hit Rollins and that allowed Rey to keep Seth busy on the outside while Dominik landed the 619 for the win.
Roman Reigns def. The Fiend and Braun Strowman
Strowman kicked off the match by attacking The Fiend before his entrance was even over. However, as usual, that did little to damage the champion.
It wasn’t long before he hit Sister Abigail, but Strowman managed to kick out and roll to the outside to try and survive.
That didn’t work out well either, though. The Fiend would then hit a uranagi on Strowman and put him through the announce table. At this point, there was still no appearance from Reigns.
As The Fiend approached Strowman with a mallet – yes, a mallet – the former Wyatt Family man launched a chair at The Fiend and lived to fight another day.
But not for long. The brutalising continued at ringside as Wyatt nailed Strowman with the mallet and the ringside steps. The Monster Among Men got back into it by driving Wyatt through a table off of the stage.
Back in the ring, a superplex from the top sees the ring implode. That’s the cue for Roman Reigns’ music and he finally signs the contract and hits the ring.
From there he beats both men with chairs, gives The Fiend a low blow and lands a Spear on Strowman for the win.
