‘He absolutely killed us’ – Olly Murs reveals how Wayne Rooney caned him for being late for Soccer Aid training with England

Soccer Aid isn’t about who wins or loses, but try telling that to Wayne Rooney.

England’s all-time top scorer is the Three Lions’ co-manager in the England vs World XI charity match, and it’s clear he wants to win it badly.

So turning up late for training is an absolute no-no if Rooney is your boss, and popstar Olly Murs found out the hard way.

The Soccer Aid mainstay revealed to talkSPORT that he and reality star Mark Wright were caned by Rooney for being late to training.

Murs told talkSPORT Breakfast: “We turned up, me and Wrighty, and he absolutely killed us!

“He said ‘I can’t believe you’re late, why are you late for training? You’ve got to take this more seriously.

“I was like ‘woah, woah, woah, Wayne I’ve been doing some promos for the show’ – ‘Well, I don’t care, get out on the football pitch. Come on we’ve got to win it this year.’”

Soccer Aid, which was founded in 2006, is an exhibition match played between former professionals and celebrities, with the likes of Murs, Paddy McGuinness, Lee Mack, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and Michael Owen playing for England.

It’s primary purpose is to raise money for children’s charity UNICEF but Murs loves that Rooney’s competitive juices are flowing ahead of the match.

Murs added: “He’s really excited, he’s been giving us the treatment. He’s been shouting at us, screaming at us.

“He wants to win and I love that.

“Turning up to Soccer Aid, as much as a laugh it is with all the lads, I love people taking it seriously because that’s what it’s all about.

“With Wayne, you can see it doesn’t matter what game it is, he wants to win.”
