Football fans will be able to return to stadiums from next month as the coronavirus lockdown restrictions continue to be eased.


The relaxation of the rules allowed some fans in to see the closing stages of the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield at the weekend.

There are also a number of pilot events to be held in the coming weeks, which include rugby matches and racing at Goodwood.


Capacity will be limited and those attending will be banned from singing or shouting to prevent the spread of COVID-19.


The Premier League gets back underway on September 12 with trials planned for later in the month before a more widespread roll-out in October.


Prime Minister Boris Johnson called off planned pilot events with some fans in attendance during the first two weeks of August amid fears over the coronavirus infection rate.

But the government has now sanctioned the public attending a small number of sporting events, with a view to reopening competition venues for sports fans, with social distancing measures in place, from October 1.


Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “The nation’s hard work to keep the virus under control means we can now make further careful progress on recovery with allowing audiences back for indoor performances, fans back at sports events and the reopening of more Covid-19 secure leisure businesses.

Manchester United‘s Old Trafford continues to be the largest club stadium in the country and there is always talk of that being increased.


Tottenham only recently jumped into second place, ahead of their north London rivals Arsenal, when their new stadium was completed.


Newly-promoted Leeds have a Premier League worthy ground in Elland Road that boasts a capacity of nearly 38,000.

Fulham went up to the top flight by this year’s play-offs and their capacity is set to increase to nearly 30,000.


Owner Shahid Khan is expanding the Riverside Stand in an £80million development that will see the total number of fans the ground can hold from 25,700 to 29,600.


There is no clear timetable for when we are likely to see stadiums back to their full capacity and a lot will depend on how successful the trial events are.
