Whyte looked in complete control, sending his opponent to the canvas twice in the fourth round, before being caught by a huge uppercut in the fifth.

The defeat also left the 32-year-old’s heavyweight title dreams in tatters with Povetkin taking his place as mandatory challenger.

Whyte has been the WBC’s top contender for more than 1,000 days and was very vocal about being made to wait so long.

Tyson Fury is the current WBC champion and would have been made to face Whyte if he beats Deontay Wilder in his trilogy fight later this year.

Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum couldn’t resist having a dig at the defeated British heavyweight.

He wrote on Twitter: “Dillian Whyte was so busy fighting for his WBC mandatory position that he didn’t see Povetkin’s uppercut, which knocked him cold on his a**.

“Pulev will KO Joshua next. London Bridges are falling.”

Whyte has a rematch clause with Povetkin and will enact it, according to Eddie Hearn.

His chances of becoming a world champion any time soon appear to have vanished, even if he can win the second fight.

Andy Ruiz Jr also showed no mercy in a video following Whyte’s defeat.

The Mexican-American said: “I was so happy that Whyte got his a*** knocked the f*** out.

“You know what, because he doesn’t have respect for the fighters – that’s what gets me p***ed off.”

The former heavyweight champion also tweeted simply a crying-with-laughter emoji.
