Leeds United are reportedly planning a shock swoop for Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey.

Marcelo Bielsa is on the hunt for new attackers and, according to transfer journalist Manu Lonjon, the Whites have identified the Jamaica international as one of their targets.

Bailey, who hit five goals and added three assists in 22 matches last season, is said to be valued at £40million by the Bundesliga club.

Despite being just 23 years old, Bailey has plenty of experience at the top level.

The youngster, with his father and brother, decided to leave his native Jamaica as a teenager to find a football club in Europe, and after problems caused by signing minor players he eventually ended up at Belgian side Genk.

He won the Belgian Young Player of the Year award with the club, getting experience in the Europa League, before commanding a £18m transfer fee from Leverkusen in 2017.

At the time he was attracting interest from the Premier League, with Manchester United among his suitors, but he chose Leverkusen instead, where he was given the no.9 shirt and has since scored 24 goals in 116 matches.

His form in Germany renewed United’s interest, and also saw Chelsea linked with an £85m swoop for the winger.

The news of Leeds’ pursuit of Bailey comes after reports linking Valencia ace Rodrigo with a move to Elland Road.

It is understood Valencia value the striker at £30m, but the LaLiga side are strapped for cash and may be willing to lower their asking fee.

The 29-year-old, who has spent six years at the Mestalla, netted seven goals in 34 appearances last season.

The new top-flight campaign kicks off on September 12 and will see Leeds travel to reigning champions Liverpool for a stunning opening day clash.
