Katie Taylor vs Delfine Persoon RESULT: Taylor WINS thrilling rematch by unanimous decision as Conor McGregor praises ‘Ireland’s greatest’

Katie Taylor settled her rivalry with Delfine Persoon by winning a unanimous decision in their rematch on Saturday night.

The Irish star won their first meeting through a controversial verdict last year and they shared another close ten rounds at Fight Camp.

The bout began with some fleet-footed boxing from Taylor at the start of the opener.

Persoon responded quickly though, smothering the champion and finding a home for her overhand rights.

Taylor picked her shots well in the second as she evaded Persoon’s roughhouse tactics and bloodied her nose.

Round three was better for the Belgian, who was able to land with more consistency.

She continued this pattern into the fourth and had success dragging Taylor in to fight her style of fight.

The Irish boxer battled to try and regain control in the fifth, but Persoon matched her all the way.

The work rate of the challenger continued to trouble the champion through rounds six, seven and eight, yet Taylor picked the cleaner single shots throughout this period.

Coming into the final two rounds, it was unclear who had the lead with many difficult rounds to score.

Similarly to their first meeting, the Belgian attempted to wear her opponent down and relentlessly pummelled her with straight punches.

Both women finished well in a thrilling last two minutes with the decision left up to the judges once again.

They scored it 98-93, 96-94, 96-94 for Taylor.

The champion said post-fight: “It’s never gonna be an easy fight against Delfine.

“I thought I boxed a lot better than last time, I stuck to my boxing this time and that’s what got me the win in the end.

“We’ve had two fantastic fights. What an amazing fight for women’s boxing.”

Persoon said: “This time I respect the result. I could not hurt her this time. It was technical, she’s good at that.”

“She deserved this time to win.”

Conor McGregor tweeted post-fight: “Huge congrats Katie Taylor!!! Put that one to bed for sure, no questions! Top drawer stuff as always from Ireland’s greatest.”
