Simon Jordan has told talkSPORT he believes Liverpool’s decision to pull out the race to sign Timo Werner was not solely down to financial restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Chelsea are in pole position to complete a £53million deal for the RB Leipzig star, despite months of speculation claiming the Germany international would link up with Jurgen Klopp’s men.
And while Klopp recently admitted the club couldn’t morally sanction the deal in the current climate, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan believes other mitigating factors also came into Liverpool’s thought process when weighing up whether to make a move or not.
“Liverpool’s decision to not take a player is not just about finances,” he told The Press Box on talkSPORT.
“It’s about the balance of the dressing room and where they are in their development programme.
“With respect to their cash flow and with respect to their finances, if Man United can buy Bruno Fernandes and pay for him over five years, then Liverpool could have done the same thing.
“It’s probably a lot more about the structure of what is going on inside that football club, the set-up they have, and how Klopp wants to build the team that he’s already got.
“It’s very rare I hear myself saying this sort of thing, but sometimes managers manage the players they’ve got and develop them.”
Speaking on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, ex-Blues striker Tony Cascarino expressed his belief that the 24-year-old would have struggled to get into the Liverpool team in the current climate.
“Most players want to be guaranteed a starting place,” began Casc, “and Timo Werner probably got that guarantee from Frank Lampard where he is going to play, and he’s going to play a lot of games.

“I think that’s very important for Werner because I’m not sure he’d get in front of [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah or [Roberto] Firmino [at Liverpool].
“We don’t know if one of those will be sold, but obviously Klopp wouldn’t want that to happen; he’d want to keep all three.
“And I think it’s a case he’d have to fight for a place just to get in that team.”
