Horse racing tips: Today’s best bets as action resumes behind closed doors at Newmarket and Newcastle
Today marks the beginning of a four-day extravaganza from Newmarket – and now we can safely say horse racing is really back.
The sport just isn’t the same without the famous Rowley Mile of Flat racing’s HQ, and its return means the status quo is largely restored.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the next few action-packed afternoons is this weekend’s 2,000 Guineas, but today’s card is a fine hors d’oeuvre for the feast to come.
With the first six races for unraced horses, the formbook begins in earnest at 4.45 with a useful 0-85 handicap – Newmarket’s first of the season.
Mia Mento (4.45) definitely has a big chance, and your memory bank doesn’t have to stretch too far to remember his promising second at Newcastle back in March.
That was a good effort on just his second start for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam, and there’s every reason to expect improvement.
He had some useful form back in Ireland as a two-year-old and has dropped to a mark from which he should be very competitive, so a big run is on the cards under ideal conditions.
Just over an hour later, Deep Intrigue (5.55) should go extremely close in the most valuable contest of the afternoon.
Mark Johnston has hit the ground running this week with most of his horses and, as always with the Middleham maestro, fitness doesn’t seem to be a problem.
His contender has hit the woodwork more times than Marcus Rashford but should be primed to win now considering how well the stable is going.
He was last seen finishing second in a similar contest here last July and returns off the same mark, so off bottom weight he’ll be tough to beat if as effective on the Rowley Mile.
Deep Intrigue could give you the perfect opportunity to take advantage of Betfred’s cracking Bet £10, get £40 offer, available here for all new customers.*
Meanwhile, durable Newcastle hosts its third meeting in four days. The Group 3 Betway Pavilion Stakes is the clear highlight on the card, with a cool £20k going to the winner.

Malotru, named after a Tintin character, heads the market and will be aiming to become Newcastle’s very own Looney Toon.
He certainly has strong claims, though may struggle to contain the exciting A’Ali (3.55).
Simon Crisford’s electric speedster was one of the top two-year-olds of last year and held his own in much better company than this.
He has to give weight away but is a big bull of a sprinter who should relish the tapeta surface and is as classy as they come on his day.
