Horse racing tips: Betting preview and best bets from Newmarket, including Quadrilateral in 1,000 Guineas

Sporting occasions can often be one-sided but today’s 1,000 Guineas is very much four-sided.

Quadrilateral (3.35) is the one to beat and should win fair and square in the first fillies’ Classic of the season.

Roger Charlton’s magnificent three-year-old had a hat-trick of starts last year and won all of them, most recently careering home to land the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile in October.

Victory didn’t look likely for much of the final furlong that day but her excess stamina kicked in and she beat a very smart horse in Powerful Breeze, with the pair clear of the rest.

That form is the best in the race and with the prospect of plenty more to come, she looks a good thing.

We’re yet to see how she progresses but the reports have been good and her pedigree suggests she’ll only get better.

Aidan O’Brien sends over Love and Jessica Harrington also has a strong contender in Millisle, but neither should be capable of downing the classy daughter of Frankel.

It’s a beltingly good card at Newmarket this afternoon and aside from the Guineas, there are other morsels to get your teeth stuck into.

The Listed Pretty Polly Stakes is always a good pointer to horses set for future stardom and Trefoil (3.00) has bags of potential.

Ralph Beckett has a special way with fillies and you can be sure he’ll have one eye on the Oaks for his well-bred contender.

She sluiced up in a maiden at this track last season and her experience of the Rowley Mile undulations will stand her in good stead now.

Elsewhere, Lingfield played host to some informative fare on Friday and there’s competitive stuff on the all-weather this afternoon once again.

The drop to 7f can work the oracle for Rivas Rob Roy (4.35), who blitzed them from the front back in February.

He wasn’t quite as good stepped up to a mile a month later but I’m expecting another turbo-charged performance over this shorter trip.

This is a poor race for the grade and he’s a progressive type who should out-gas them if breaking smartly from his good draw.
