Today’s fare from Newmarket is just about as good as it gets, with quality Group 1 action flanking a couple of seriously competitive handicaps.
Racing at Newmarket is back on today with no fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic
Epsom has been deprived of its Coronation Cup showpiece but luckily the Rowley Mile has parachuted in to rescue it, and a strong field heads to post for the feature.
However, it’s a very tricky race for a punter and I’m shying away in favour of a couple other races on the card. One of those is the Betway Abernant Stakes, where Oxted (2.25) makes plenty of appeal.

Roger Teal has a live outsider in the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday but might be opening the champagne a day earlier than planned if his improving sprinter lands this Group 3 sprint – and he’ll fancy his chances. His speedster showed the Portland field a clean pair of heels on Town Moor last year and is now rated just a few pounds shy of hot favourite Brando.
I expect him to have plenty more improvement in the locker as a lightly-raced four-year-old and these conditions are ideal for him – so provided he gets a nice tow into the race, he’ll take some stopping.
Sangarius (3.00) had time to start up his own rendition of Pomp and Circumstance when careering home in the Hampton Court at Royal Ascot last year and he’ll be mighty hard to beat in the Paradise Stakes.
He’s also entered at Haydock on Sunday but this is more likely to be his destination.

Over at Lingfield, a tasty card is made even tastier by trials for the Oaks and the Derby.
The latter looks fiendishly tricky but the former boasts a filly who could go all the way to the top in Miss Yoda (2.40).
John Gosden has won this race in the past and his contender has a bright future ahead of her.
She wasn’t at her best when third at the back-end of last season but soft ground counted against her and on her previous two wins she looked a most exciting prospect.
This isn’t the strongest Oaks Trial in the world and gives the daughter of Sea The Stars a big chance to take a step towards emulating her illustrious father.
