EXCLUSIVE: Charlotte Flair talks ‘jump starting’ Bayley and Sasha Banks’ storyline, the ‘cool’ growth of Chelsea Green and Liv Morgan
Charlotte Flair has been the yard stick in many eyes for women’s professional wrestling when it comes to WWE.
Some fans have cited nepotism when it comes to the 12 titles she has amassed between NXT and WWE – her father is, of course, the great Ric Flair – but there is no denying her excellent in-ring work at this stage.
She’s delivered on the big stage every time and now, she’s in the midst of a reign as NXT Women’s champion where she’s trying to lift the value of the brand, the title and her foes that chase it.
This weekend, she faces Io Shirai and the women she dethroned at WrestleMania 36, Rhea Ripley, in a triple-threat match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
talkSPORT caught up with her on a conference call and we asked The Queen about getting involved in a storyline with her fellow Horsewomen on SmackDown the other week.
Flair was trying to get through to Sasha Banks about how Bayley is using her to remain champion and Flair thought it was a perfect moment to use her.
“Bayley and I have come full circle on RAW and SmackDown and from NXT in terms of storylines and facing each other. What’s fun about facing the fellow Four Horsewomen is we continue to change and grow and go back to these matches and see how we can make each one different and better – that’s what’s so much fun about that.
“Because there is so much history there. And to be able to poke the bear and kind of jump start their storyline, it only felt fitting for it to be me – because who could have been better, you know? [laughs].”
Flair has also been working with a variety of different women since becoming NXT Women’s champion as she has been appearing on all of RAW, SmackDown and NXT.
However, despite enjoying seeing the growth of some talents, Flair has enjoyed the challenges of working without an audience the most.
“I’ve had the opportunity to face Liv [Morgan before] and Ruby Riott and Chelsea [Green]. To be honest, what I’m having the most fun with is the empty arena element.
“It’s really been a learning experience and I’ve taken it seriously to where, how can I stand out as a performer with this circumstance and how do I improve with it?
“Having the opportunity to work with Liv – I’ve worked her, what, twice now? – seeing her growth, Chelsea’s growth and just being able to be apart of every division on RAW, SmackDown and NXT [is fun].
“But what I’ve had honestly the most fun with is taking this challenge of the empty arena and standing out. Elevating my work by growing through this circumstance.”
NXT TakeOver: In Your House goes down this Sunday with an absolutely stacked card on the WWE Network
