Daniel Bryan reveals why he didn’t want to join WWE in 2009
Daniel Bryan has admitted he did not want to sign with WWE in 2009.
The 39-year-old is a five-time world champion and main-evented WrestleMania 30 in 2014.
But things could have panned out very differently had he not returned in 2009 after leaving six years earlier.
Bryan told WWE Backstage: “I actively did not want to go WWE.
“I really liked the DIY aspect, I liked being in control of my own schedule.
“Like being able to take a couple of weeks off here and I’m going to do this thing.
“I am going to watch a Seahawks game with my dad. You know, all that kind of stuff.”
Bryan’s return did not last long as he sacked by the company for strangling ring announcer Justin Roberts and spitting in John Cena’s face during a televised segment in June 2010.
The attack was reportedly deemed too violent for WWE’s PG-era.
But he was rehired just two months later and has been an ever-present in WWE ever since.
The Yes Man was forced to retire from wrestling due to concussion-related issues in February 2016.
However, he was cleared by doctors to make a wrestling comeback in March 2018.
Bryan is regarded as one of WWE’s top stars today.
