Conor McGregor RETIRES from UFC: ‘The Notorious’ announces he is ending fighting career with emotional social media post

Conor McGregor has retired from fighting AGAIN, just six months after making his UFC comeback.

The former two-weight world champion knocked out Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 246 at the beginning of the year in just 40 seconds as he outlined plans to fight at least three times in 2020.

However, taking to Twitter in the early hours of Sunday morning, McGregor informed fans he had decided to walk away from the sport.

Just moments after Amanda Nunes made history at UFC 250 by defending her featherweight title, the Irishman released his statement on social media confirming his retirement.

He wrote: “Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting.

“Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been!

“Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my World title wins!

“Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.”

A rematch with bitter rival Khabib Nurmagomedov seemed to be almost a certainty at some point this year for McGregor after UFC president Dana White urged ‘The Notorious’ to drop back down to lightweight.

The win over Cerrone at 170lbs also seemed to open up the possibility of fighting at welterweight against either Kamaru Usman or Jorge Masvidal, while the Irishman has traded barbs with Justin Gaethje on social media to suggest he could be a future opponent.

However, McCregor now claims he will never fight again – calling it quits at 31.

However, it is not the first time the Irishman has announced he is retiring before going back on his word and resuming his UFC career.

He first retired in 2016 after his loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, before returning at UFC 202 to avenge the defeat.

The former two-weight world champion packed it in again for the second time in April 2019 after the chastening defeat to Khabib but was back in the octagon at the start of this year.
