Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez disappoints Manchester United fans by announcing his ‘new club’ – an academy project sponsored by Nike
Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez has trolled Manchester United supporters by announcing his next club… is actually a new academy project backed by Nike.
The 25-year-old midfielder sparked rumours he could be about to sign for the Red Devils after teasing on social media he would reveal his ‘new club’ in just three days.
The Premier League giants were already linked with an interest in the Spain international, with reports Atletico were even ready to lower their asking price from his rumoured £135m buy-out clause to around £86m.
Those reports gave many supporters hope of landing the midfield talent, who has been one of Atleti’s key players in recent seasons, and they practically went into meltdown after Niguez’s announcement at the weekend.
Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand made even more fans convinced he would sign after responding to the post on Twitter.
A quick search of YouTube reveals how hopeful many Red Devils fans were of landing him, with a host of ‘welcome to Manchester United’ videos about the Spaniard being posted over the last few weeks.
But he has disappointed them all by announcing on Wednesday that his ‘new club’ is actually a new football academy he has launched with his brother.
Club Costa City, which is sponsored by global sports giants Nike, is based in Saul and Aaron Niguez’s hometown on Elche in Spain and is an academy for footballers aged 4-18.
The club will bring together over 30 teams and more than 500 players of all age groups in the city in the hope ‘to develop people that can become professional footballers.’
It appears the club will focus on developing their youngsters as people, as well as working on their football skills and ability.
Whether he intended to string along Red Devils supporters all along is unclear, but we doubt he cares much given the publicity his new project has received.
Spare a thought for all the United fans who fell for it, with some dubbing Niguez ‘the biggest let down since Di Maria’.
It’s fun for the rest of us, though!
