Atletico Madrid president suggests his side be named Champions League winners if season is terminated… as they knocked out Liverpool
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo sensationally suggested his team should be named European champions if the Champions League is terminated this season – as they knocked out Liverpool.
Discussions are currently ongoing about how to finish the tournament with Atletico already through to the quarter-finals.
Diego Simeone’s side knocked holders Liverpool out in the round-of-16 back in March shortly before the coronavirus pandemic halted football worldwide..
They went through in a 4-2 aggregate win in extra-time in a memorable night at Anfield, ending Liverpool’s quest to retain the European Cup.
Cerezo suggested his side be crowned Champions League winners if the tournament could not be finished.
He said: “We have to pay attention to the mayor of Madrid and the hypothetical case that the Champions League was not played because of the coronavirus.
“Then the champions are the ones who beat the champions.”
Despite his wish, Cerezo will likely see Atleti complete their European campaign rather than being handed the title by proxy.
UEFA are set to make a decision next week on the location and format for the remaining matches in the Champions League.
Lisbon has emerged as the favourite to host an eight-team mini tournament to decide the winners with the final played on August 23.
Cerezo added: “There are still a few knockout games left, the quarter-finals, the semis and the final.
“We understand that UEFA is trying to centralise all these matches in one city. There was talk of Spain or Portugal and making a finals of four who remain.
“Nothing is known yet, until it is official it is speaking for speaking.”
