UFC 249 fight card: Live sport returns with huge main event action – Ferguson vs Gaethje, Cejudo vs Cruz, but no Souza vs Hall

The UFC is set to enjoy one of its ‘most stacked cards’ ever at UFC 249 this weekend – although coronavirus has forced the cancelation of one fight at the last minute.

After various cancellations, location headaches and lockdown dramas, UFC 249 is going ahead at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday night.

However, it will not feature Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza after the Brazilian tested positive for coronavirus, sparking more controversy about the event taking place just hours before it kicks off.

But despite the cancellation of Souza vs Uriah Hall, the other 11 fights will still go ahead as planned behind-closed-doors, including the main-event bout between Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje.

The UFC has fought hard to get the event on and fans will be excited about the card president Dana White has booked.

Originally, UFC 249 was set to be headlined by Ferguson and lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov.

But with the Russian unable to leave the country due to coronavirus lockdown restrictions, Gaethje stepped in to a headliner role and the interim title is now up for grabs.

Elsewhere on the card, Henry Cejudo puts his Bantamweight Championship title on the line against Dominick Cruz and Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone will face Anthony Pettis.

UFC 249: What has been said?

Justin Gaethje said: “I’ve been a fan of Tony for a long time. He loves when people call him crazy, it turns him on.

“But he’s a certain kind of crazy that you have to step in the octagon and be comfortable. I believe I’m just as crazy as him in that regard.

“I’ll probably bleed. I hope he breaks my nose, I’ve been waiting for a long time for someone to break my nose, so I can get it fixed. It’s going to be fun.

“I’m going to fight until I’m finished or until Tony’s finished. That’s what I do and that’s what I’ve always done.

“I possess the power to turn his lights off and I believe I will.

“Tony Ferguson is a great competitor,” he said. “12 wins in a row, but I knock him out cold
