Tony Ferguson rushed to hospital after taking savage beating from Justin Gaethje at UFC 249
Dana White has confirmed Tony Ferguson was taken to hospital after his shock defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249.
‘El Cucuy’ took a shellacking from Gaethje in their interim lightweight title fight before Herb Dean brought a halt to proceedings in the fifth and final round.
With his face bloodied and swollen, Ferguson had started to look unrecognisable and it has since transpired he was taken to a Jacksonville hospital from the VyStars Memorial Arena.
The 36-year-old joined welterweight Niko Price in the hospital after his beating at the hands of Vicente Luque.
In his post-fight press conference, the UFC chief said: “I thought Tony Ferguson looked off tonight. He looked slow.”
Defeat for the TUF season 13 winner almost certainly ends his chances of fighting lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after their fifth scheduled fight fell away on April 18.
The Russian will now defend his regular title against Gaethje, potentially later this year, leaving Ferguson in a state of limbo.
Nurmagomedov, who is 28-0, tweeted immediately after the contest came to a bloody conclusion in the Sunshine State, initially writing, ‘No comment’.
He followed that up with the message: “Justin Gaethje it was so impressive, congratulations. Very smart fight.”
