Sir Rod Stewart brands Rangers ‘horrid’ for not conceding title to Celtic, insists Steven Gerrard knows Hoops have been better this season

Sir Rod Stewart has accused ‘horrid’ Rangers of bad sportsmanship for not conceding the Scottish Premiership title to Celtic.

The Gers, who are 13 points behind the Hoops with a game in hand, have been furious with Scottish Professional Football League chiefs over the vote to end the lower league seasons prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Scottish Premiership still hangs in the balance with Rangers desperate to avoid the same fate as the other divisions.

Last month, Rangers called for a fresh investigation into the SPFL following an independent report’s ruling that there was ‘no evidence of improper behaviour’ in how the vote to end the 2019/20 season was handled.

Rock singer and Celtic fan Stewart has slammed Rangers, while insisting even their manager Steven Gerrard knows the Hoops have been the better side this season.

He told White and Sawyer on talkSPORT: “I’ve got a feeling all our boys will want to play because they want to get nine in a row. Rangers might not want it, but we want it!

Rod Stewart is a huge Celtic fan and is not happy with Rangers’ conduct

“I’ve got to tell you guys, you know all trouble that’s going on up there, if the shoe was on the other foot, and this was Rangers and Celtic were causing such a fuss, I’d be embarrassed.

“I would want Celtic to give Rangers the league if they were 13 points in front with only eight games to go. I think this is such bad sportsmanship, it’s horrid. I really mean that I would.

“It’s 13 points, Celtic have a better goal average. I think Steven Gerrard will even admit that Celtic, overall, this season were the better team and we could have increased our lead with those last eight games.

“The Scottish Football Association wants it to stop and Celtic will be champions.

“Now they’re talking about a 14-team league, which would save Hearts. But it’s so confusing, I read about it every day and I’m still not on top of it.”

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to

  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with

  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person

  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

The government has also issued further detail on what we can do during lockdown.

Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.

The 42 Scottish clubs will vote on May 12 on whether to instigate an external review of the circumstances surrounding the vote to end the lower three divisions, and possibly the Premiership season.

The controversy stems from Dundee’s call to reverse their deciding ‘no’ vote to end the lower league divisions in Scotland.

talkSPORT host and Rangers legend Ally McCoist called the SPFL’s voting scandal an ‘absolute shambles’, while Gerrard dubbed it an ‘absolute mess’.
