Premier League clubs reiterate desire to complete 2019-20 season with caution and under ‘government guidance’

Premier League clubs have reiterated their desire to complete the 2019-20 season amid the coronavirus pandemic following a shareholders’ meeting.

The English top flight has been suspended indefinitely since March 13 due to the outbreak of deadly disease, and on Friday all clubs were briefed on the league’s ‘Project Restart’ plans.

Alan Brazil suggests playing remaining games at St George’s Park

The league stressed that any return to training and match action would only happen if the Government gave the go-ahead.

A statement read: “The league and clubs are considering the first tentative moves forward and will only return to training and playing with Government guidance, under expert medical advice and after consultation with players and managers.

“The league welcomed the creation of the Government medical working group for a return of elite sport, which met for the first time this morning.

“No decisions were taken at today’s shareholders’ meeting and clubs exchanged views on the information provided regarding Project Restart. It was agreed that the PFA, LMA, players and managers are key to this process and will be further consulted.

“The clubs reconfirmed their commitment to finishing the 2019/20 season, maintaining integrity of the competition and welcomed the Government’s support.”

Meanwhile, talkSPORT host Alan Brazil has suggested that the remaining matches could be played at St George’s Park to get the 2019/20 season completed.

He said: “Let me get this off my chest. Would this work? What I’ve heard, it might not be brand new. One of the rumours I’ve heard flying around.

“They want to get the games played, yes we know that, but how do they do it? What about St George’s Park?

“All the games are played there, the teams move up and around St George’s Park, they are tested before the games. The TV cameras are there and there are no supporters there at all and they get the games done and we can see it live on tele.

“We are talking about June and July and get the season finished. Does that work if they are all around St George’s Park, they play the games there? We see what happens. We get points on the board and we have winners, we have losers.”
