How to make your own disinfectant wipes at home as shops sell out




From flour to toilet roll, a number of useful items have been in high demand amid the coronavirus pandemic.



One of the most difficult items to get your hands on has been disinfectant wipes, with many shops and supermarkets selling out.


Thankfully, there’s a very simple way to make your own wipes at home, using basic household items.


Unsurprisingly, the key ingredient is bleach, which has been shown to kill coronavirus on a range of surfaces.


However, bleach can be very dangerous if used correctly, so make sure you wear gloves and clothes you don’t mind getting splashed while making your own disinfectant wipes.


How to make disposable wipes


To make disposable wipes, you’ll need:


– A roll of paper towels


– Around 115ml of bleach


– 4.5 litres of water


– An airtight container that’s large enough to fit a paper towel roll


– Gloves

  1. Put on your gloves and set up your materials on a safe, clean surface

  2. Pour water into the container, before pouring in the bleach

  3. Place your paper towels in the solution, ensuring they’re fully submerged

  4. Allow the towels to soak for around five minutes

  5. Start using the wipes! After using them, don’t touch the surface for five minutes – this will give the solution time to kill any possible viruses

How to make reusable wipes


To make reusable wipes, you’ll need:


– Small microfibre kitchen cloths


– Around 115ml of bleach


– 4.5 litres of water


– An airtight container that’s large enough to fit the cloths


– Gloves


  1. Put on your gloves and set up your materials on a safe, clean surface

  2. Pour water into the container, before pouring in the bleach

  3. Place your microfibre kitchen cloths in the solution, ensuring they’re fully submerged

  4. Allow the towels to soak for around five minutes

  5. Start using the wipes! After using them, don’t touch the surface for five minutes – this will give the solution time to kill any possible viruses

The wipes will remain effective at killing the coronavirus for around 24 hours.
