Former Tottenham and Liverpool chief Damien Comolli fears financial implications of coronavirus could land Premier League clubs in ‘big trouble’ over next few seasons

Several Premier League clubs could be in ‘big trouble’ over the next few years due to the financial devastation caused by the coronavirus, former Tottenham and Liverpool transfer chief Damien Comolli believes.

The global health crisis has seen all football suspended since March and talks are ongoing as to how, when and where the campaign can be restarted.

Damien Comolli, who was Liverpool’s director of football for just 18 months, is fearing the worst for some Premier League sides

Top-flight sides have already recorded significant losses in revenue due to football’s suspension and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish warned that Covid-19 could leave clubs financially hurting like airlines come August if play does not resume behind closed doors.

And Comolli, who has worked with several top European clubs, fears that the financial devastation caused by the pandemic could even see clubs go bust in the near future.

“We could see clubs collapsing and could also see clubs in the Premier League getting into big trouble because they have to pay for the financial damage and do not have the revenue to show for that,” he told talkSPORT.

“It’s difficult to anticipate what will happen and I don’t want to sound dramatic but it doesn’t look good.

“When you see the match day revenue that Premier League clubs are already losing – they are huge numbers.

“I think everybody is talking about this season – but we have to remember that half of next season will be played behind closed doors so we are talking financial problems for the big clubs because they have the biggest stadiums and attendances.

“We are talking of losses which are north of 100 million pounds and the effect of this will be seen this season, next season and for years after that.”

Comolli continued to suggest that only star names will be handed big contracts in the future, claiming players at less financially stable clubs will have to expect significant drops in wages.

“There are players at big clubs who are coming to the end of their contracts – like [Jan] Vertonghen or Thomas Meunier at PSG”, he said.

“Those players are becoming a really hot property now and they’re going to get big contracts that they might not have got if the virus didn’t hit us – but this is a very specific niche of players.

“On the other hand, the players who are not that type of player cannot expect a leap in renumeration.”
