Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince wants season to restart behind closed doors ‘when safe to do so’ amid coronavirus pandemic

Forest Green Rovers owner Dale Vince claims the best thing for all EFL clubs would be to complete the 2019/20 season, when it’s safe to do so.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Leagues One and Two would be called off with a points-per-game system used to determine promotion and relegation.

Vince insisted this was not the case and said the best thing to do is finish the rest of this campaign.

“I think the best thing we can do is get the season back on behind doors, when it is safe to do so,” he told talkSPORT.

“I think we can learn a lot from the Germans who have opened up their leagues but the best thing we can do for the fans, sponsors and finances of clubs is finish the league and get ready to start the new one.

“It’s worse to not play behind closed doors, in my view, than it is to play behind closed doors financially.

“We can live stream games to our fans who are missing football. More of our games will be on TV because there’s a shortage of sport on TV and we can engage with an audience and gain revenue.

“If we don’t play games behind closed doors we have nothing but keep all of our overheads.”

Vince also argued that the coronavirus pandemic, and the problems it has caused, is an opportunity for the EFL to review how the league is set up.

“The EFL don’t have enough control over the type of people who have ownership of football clubs,” he explained.

“That’s partly because you can get into debt and be reckless in the pursuit of promotion and ultimately you can bring down a football clubs in the process and we need to stop that.”
