Endless stoppages at Leicester, little interuption at Newcastle – How many VAR reviews every Premier League ground has had this season

The Premier League has become well-acquainted with VAR since introducing it at the start of the season. But not in a good way…

The use of the new technology has been criticised hugely this season, with many from talkSPORT voicing their huge concerns about VAR.

In a memorable rant, Adrian Durham referred to Stockley Park, which is where the video assistant referees are based during Premier League matches, as a ‘comedy club’.

After a match between Chelsea and Tottenham, where Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso was very lucky to escape a red card for a stamp on Cesar Azpilicueta, Durham said: “VAR has just achieved the impossible – it’s got even worse!

“Letting refs run VAR was always a risk, but today has just been laughable.

“Lo Celso stamped on Azpilicueta and I was surprised when Michael Oliver, who is our best ref, didn’t give it but I fell of my chair when the VAR decided it wasn’t a clear and obvious error.

“Saying Lo Celso didn’t have anywhere else to put his foot?! Breathtakingly incorrect!

“And then, with the game still being playing out, Stockley Park admitted they got it wrong and it should have been red.

“Chelsea still won the game, but Stockley Park is now a comedy club, a total joke.”

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to

  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with

  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person

  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary
