Dillian Whyte pays tribute to his mum, who is working as an NHS nurse during coronavirus pandemic

Dillian Whyte paid tribute to the brilliant job his NHS nurse mum is doing during the coronavirus pandemic.

The heavyweight boxer revealed how he wanted his mum to stop doing the job because of the risks involved due to COVID-19 but she wanted to carry on helping people.

Whyte spoke to talkSPORT this week and spoke in glowing terms about his mother

Whyte told talkSPORT: “My mum’s a nurse. I tried to get her to stop in this time but her mindset is ‘I’m old and there’s a lot of old people not being reached or not having the service they need’.

“My mum said ‘I’m old. While I’m still working and in good health I’m going to try and help those people. I’m not going to think about myself and say because I’m scared and nervous I’m going to hide away. No I’m going to help them because soon I will be in the same boat as them’.

“I said ‘well I can’t say anymore than that’. I’m very proud of her for being brave and doing that.”

Adrian Durham replied: “Well done to her. We’re proud of her and send her our best wishes as well. We hope that goes really well and what a hero.”

Whyte was speaking exclusively to talkSPORT’s Drivetime, and also discussed his hopes of setting up a heavyweight showdown with Andy Ruiz Jr.

Whyte posted a screenshot on Twitter earlier this week of an email offer from his promoter Eddie Hearn to Andy Ruiz Jr.

The pair were in negotiations for a fight earlier this year, but a deal could not be made and the Brit ultimately agreed to a bout with Alexander Povetkin instead, which was due to take place earlier this month but has since been postponed.

Hearn text Whyte, showing him the offer that was made to Ruiz Jr’s rep Tom Brown of TGB promotion

Whyte initially claimed they’d offered Ruiz Jr $5million, but Ruiz Jr hit back and insisted this was not the case.

The ‘Body Snatcher’ responded by posting screenshots of his text messages from Eddie Hearn, who’d forwarded him the email of the offer.

This showed that the offer was in fact $4m, however Hearn suggested they would now make a new offer increased to $5m.

Whyte said: “Eddie tried to make the fight, I think he offered him $4million and said ‘here’s $4m, if it’s not enough we’ll make it $5m and we have a fight’.

“The budget was $5m from what I can see. You don’t open a negotiation at the top of the bar, you open it with wiggle room. This is the business.”
