Conor McGregor next fight: Dana White claims Jorge Masvidal could defend his BMF belt on Fight Island against ‘The Notorious’

Dana White has revealed Jorge Masvidal could defend his ‘BMF’ title against Conor McGregor on Fight Island.

‘Gamebred’ has enjoyed a remarkable rise to the pinnacle of the sport in the past 12 months, knocking out Darren Till and Ben Askren in sensational style.

The welterweight then fought fellow brawler Nate Diaz at UFC 244 for the chance to become the ‘Baddest M***** F*****’ in the company and duly delivered with a clinical performance.

A title shot against Kamaru Usman has failed to materialise and it now seems as though the Miami-native is set to square off against ‘The Notorious’.

McGregor’s plans for a fight ‘season’ in 2020 were seemingly scuppered when, after a sensational 40-second stoppage of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, the coronavirus pandemic put pay to the Irishman’s plans.

But UFC president White appears to have thrown the Irishman hope of fighting again this year and even for a title (albeit a slightly fictitious one).

Appearing on the Menace and the Man podcast, White all-but appeared to rule out a welterweight title fight for Masvidal.

“The Usman fight is the fight that makes sense,” White said. “It’s the fight that needs to happen if Masvidal wants a title shot.

“But, yeah, there’s another interesting fight out there for him right now.”

When asked about Masvidal potentially defending his BMF title against ‘The Notorious on Fight Island, White added: “Very good point. That’s a possibility too.”

After the lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson was cancelled, the 50-year-old revealed ambitious plans in April to have Fight Island up and running this month.

He told ESPN: “That’s why I’m telling all my guys not to worry because ‘Fight Island’ is going to happen.

“All the infrastructure is being built right now and getting put in place. As we get closer to that, then I’ll start figuring out booking fights, getting guys ready.

“Plus, I can ship guys over there earlier, and they can start training over there, on the island.

“So, once that’s all in place – we’re looking at like a month – I’ll have that all put together, and guys can start training and can go there.

“I’m sure people are gonna be ready to get out of their houses in another month and go to an island somewhere and train.”
