Chelsea and Manchester United ready to capitalise as Liverpool stall in Timo Werner transfer race due to financial impact of coronavirus

Manchester United and Chelsea have reportedly moved ahead of Liverpool in the race for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner – with Reds chiefs unwilling to spend big to land the forward amid the coronavirus crisis.

Speculation has been rife about the future of the Germany star, who has had a phenomenal campaign with 27 goals in 36 appearances.

Liverpool have also been heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old in recent months, but according to German outlet Bild, Anfield chiefs are unwilling to meet his £51million release clause as the financial devastation of COVID-19 continues to take it’s tole on Premier League clubs.

It is also believed Jurgen Klopp has been frustrated by the fact he cannot meet the player in person due to the pandemic.

The report states that United and Chelsea are now willing to take advantage of Liverpool’s transfer circumspection by advancing their interest in the red-hot striker.

Blues boss Frank Lampard is on the hunt for a striker this summer and reports last months claimed Stamford Bridge chiefs had made ‘direct contact’ with the Bundesliga club.

However, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff recently said he was ‘deeply relaxed’ about the forward’s future, insisting he has made no indication that he wants to leave the club this summer.

“I’m deeply relaxed about Werner,” he told Sky Deutschland.

“He hasn’t signalled yet that he wants to leave at the end of the season and he doesn’t have to.

“He has a contract until 2023.”
