Atalanta rocked by tragic death of 19-year-old midfielder Andrea Rinaldi who suffered brain aneurysm

Atalanta midfielder Andrea Rinaldi has died at the age of 19, three days after suffering a brain aneurysm while training at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Rinaldi was part of the youth set up at the Serie A side, and had been on loan at fourth-tier outfit Legnano this season.

Legnano described Rinaldi’s death as ‘a sudden and shocking tragedy’ in a club statement on Monday.

“Andrea fought for three days after the illness that hit him. Unfortunately there was nothing to do,” they said.

“Just as on the pitch you were always the last to surrender, this time too you fought with all your might not to fly away too soon.”

Rinaldi’s parent side, Atalanta, have also been shellshocked by the news, adding: “President Antonio Percassi and the whole Atalanta family, deeply moved, send their most heartfelt sympathy to Andrea Rinaldi’s family members and AC Legnano for his passing.

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to

  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with

  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person

  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

The government has also issued further detail on what we can do during lockdown.

Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.

“Always available and positive, he knew how to make himself well-liked by everyone.

“Just as on the pitch you were always the last to surrender, this time too you fought with all your might not to fly away too soon.”

Rinaldi had been on Atalanta’s books since the age of 13, winning both the Under-17 league title and Super Cup in 2017.

The midfielder, who previously had loan spells at Imolese and Mezzolara, had made 23 appearances for Legnano in 2019/20.
