What do you get when the entire Scotland squad has hours to kill before an appearance on Top of the Pops but the only thing to do is go to the bar?
A team that was ‘absolutely hammered’ by the time they went on the telly, according to Alan Brazil.
Al and his former teammates were making an appearance on the famous BBC show to promote their 1982 World Cup song ‘We Have a Dream’.
But as is usually the case for shows like this, meticulous preparation is required to ensure a smooth broadcast.
The Scotland squad arrived to the studios early to rehearse their song but once they were done, they were still hours away from the real thing.
They weren’t allowed to leave the studios and all they had access to was the in-built bar. Uh oh…
You can figure out what happened next but Al revealed how being intoxicated was actually beneficial for him and the Scotland team ahead of filming for the real thing.
He recalled on Sports Breakfast: “I remember in 1982 when we went with Scotland ‘We Have a Dream’ and we went down to Top of the Pops.
“It was really early and the problem was it was a nightmare. It was chaos, it was carnage. You had Scotland there, you had England there and you had Tottenham with the FA Cup final song.
“We got there really early, we had the first hit with rehearsals but the bar was open! So by the time 7:30 came we were hammered! We were absolutely hammered.
“But we got away with it because of the type of song we had and we just enjoyed it.”
There were no celebrations at the end of the tournament as Scotland were eliminated at the first hurdle in Spain but at least the appearance on Top of the Pops was one to remember…
