WhatsApp now lets you call up to eight friends at once - here's how to try it

It’s the go-to messaging app for billions of people around the world, and now WhatsApp has introduced an exciting new feature.

WhatsApp now lets you Group Call up to eight people at once, making it easier to stay in touch with friends during the coronavirus lockdown.

The new feature was spotted by WABetaInfo, in the beta version of the app.

WABetaInfo explained: “Today WhatsApp is finally ready to roll out the possibility to add 8 participants in a group voice or video call, for everyone having the latest iOS and Android beta update installed.”

While WhatsApp has had a video call feature for years, until now users were limited to four participants per video call.

The change puts WhatsApp in direct competition with other popular video-chat apps, including Houseparty and Zoom.

How to use the updated Group Call feature

There are two ways to make group calls on WhatsApp:

1. Open a group and tap the Call button. If the group has a number of participants higher than the old limit (4) in a call, WhatsApp will ask which contacts you wish to call to, otherwise the call will be directly started.

2. Open the Calls tab, tap the Call button, then select New group call: here you can select which contacts to call.

To access the new feature, you’ll need to install the 2.20.50.25 iOS beta update from TestFlight and the 2.20.133 beta from Google Play.

WABetaInfo added: “If the feature isn’t available for you (and you have also reinstalled WhatsApp), don’t worry.

“WhatsApp is gradually rolling out it, and in the next hours you should be able to receive the activation from the server.”
