Vince McMahon has always loved matchups that split generations and why not – they’re proven money makers.
Back at WrestleMania 19, The Rock met Hulk Hogan in the battle of two of the biggest stars the industry has ever seen.
It was an unprecedented success. McMahon still likes to bring in legends like Goldberg to meet that same demand, but there’s only a handful of talents that have that serious star power.
The Rock is one of those men.
It’s been believed The Rock is retired from wrestling after a throwaway comment he made in an interview a few years back, but in answering a question on his Instagram live, it seems the Great One has left the door open.
“Rock vs Roman Reigns — is it possible? Sure, anything is possible.
“I’m always open and that’s the cool thing about professional wrestling – there’s an adaptability to pro wrestling and you never say never in pro wrestling and you never say never with Vince McMahon, who has been one of my mentors in business for a very long time and a very, very close friend and confidant. You never say no.
“You know for something like that to happen I think the venue would have to be right. I think the business model has to be right [laughs]. I’m very close with Roman, we’re family, so we’ll see.”
This is a match that has been rumoured for a long time and with WWE’s announcement that they would be taking WrestleMania 37 back to Hollywood, the rumour mill went into overdrive.
The Rock mentioning the right venue is almost a nod to those reports, too.
Roman Reigns hasn’t been shy about his desire to face his cousin, either.
Speaking at the announcement for WrestleMania 37, Reigns couldn’t have been clearer.
He said: “I said it earlier. Man, if there’s a stadium to hold… Hey DJ, check it out. Not bad, right? I mean, everyone’s always dream-matching me and him.
“First of all, we’re family so it’s all love, but if there was going to be an event for him to compete in, to perform in, a venue to hold that mass scale of attention that he’s going to bring… it’s right here in your backyard, you know what I mean? Ya ain’t gotta go far.”
That’s a matchup that spells money, WWE just need society to get back to a semblance of normality by next year so that WrestleMania can run as scheduled.
