Premier League players are on the cusp of launching a multi-million pound charity fund in response to the coronavirus crisis.
Talks between all 20 club captains and other senior stars, led by Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, have resulted in a private pot which players will make sizeable donations to.
It is expected to raise millions of pounds and the money will go straight to good causes, including the NHS, as well as ensuring football is protected from the financial ramifications of the pandemic.
According to the Telegraph, the PFA will donate £1m and its chairman Gordan Taylor will also make a £500,000 donation.
Taylor and Premier League players have come under pressure to do their bit as top-flight clubs began to furlough staff last week.
Tottenham are among the clubs to spark outrage by applying for government help with their wage bill, while Liverpool reversed their decision to do the same after a fierce backlash.
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock led the calls for players to take pay cuts and the Premier League proposed a universal 30 per cent deduction.
However, finding the best way to contribute has been complicated, and players have been in talks about how to help long before their wages became the centre of public scrutiny.
The PFA pointed out that players wanted to be assured their money would go to the right place, and also highlighted that the government could lose £200m in tax contributions if players’ wages were cut.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche joined talkSPORT yesterday to defend Premier League footballers’ response to the crisis in light of government criticism.
He said: “I’ve watched Mr Hancock deliver his comments and I can only presume, and I hope, he was ill-informed.
“I know for a fact, I’ve seen footballers as individuals do so many good things, so many things financially, so many things just with time and care and effort and attention, that it’s such a massive generalisation for Mr Hancock to throw that in.”
