And despite Premier League matches being suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, Lovren has clearly not lost his competitive edge.

When Josip was racing on to the ball, the 30-year-old won possession with a perfectly-timed slide tackle.

Lovren jokingly accused Josip of diving after falling to the ground.

In an Instagram post, he said: “VAR checking possible foul yellow for diving.”

Lovren’s Liverpool teammate Adrian leapt to the defence of Josip, jovially commenting: “Red card for the defender. It’s dangerous play.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge, who played with Lovren at Anfield for five years before leaving for Trabzonspor last summer, added: “Always saying we dive when you know it was a foul!”

Lovren has been linked with summer moves to Arsenal and Tottenham after struggling for playing time at Liverpool.

He has started just nine Premier League games this season and finds himself behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the pecking order.
