Alexis Sanchez backed to become 'key part' of Man Utd's team next season... despite flopping at Old Trafford so far and struggling during Inter loan

Paul Ince has backed Manchester United outcast Alexis Sanchez to reinvigorate his career under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer next season.

Sanchez’s move from Arsenal in January 2018 has been nothing short of a disaster, finding the net just three times in 32 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils.

The 31-year-old was one of the most lethal attackers in the division during his spell with the Gunners, netting 80 goals and providing 45 assists in 166 matches at the Emirates.

But after failing to make an impact at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho, Sanchez was sent on loan to Inter with the club hoping he would regain his magic touch.

However, the Chile international hasn’t fared much better for the Serie A giants and looks set to return to Manchester United this summer, with Solskjaer struggling to find any suitor willing to pay his hefty £400,00-a-week wages.

But former United midfielder Ince has backed Sanchez to spark a revival in the Norwegian’s new-look XI next campaign.

“I wouldn’t rule out Sanchez going back to United and being a key part of their team next season,” Ince told Paddy Power. “Football is a funny old game.

“I’ve been in the situation as a manager where I’ve thought, ‘right, I’m going to get rid of him and him’ – but when it comes to it you can’t get the deal done, so they stay at the club.

“Then pre-season comes around and they’re a totally different player to the season before, and they’re your key man the next season.

“So Sanchez could definitely go back to United, look fantastic in training, and bang suddenly he’s important to their plans after all.’

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to

  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with

  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person

  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

Sanchez forced his way out of Arsenal with both United and Manchester City desperate for his services – and Ince believes heading to Old Trafford was never the right move for the former Udinese and Barcelona star.

He added: “Going to United was a mistake. I bet Alexis wishes he’d gone to City, like he was supposed to.

“United was never, ever the right move for him; the team wasn’t settled and their style of play wasn’t conducive to him.

“And he was clearly desperate to make an impact. Look at the way Bruno Fernandes has hit the ground running at Old Trafford, that’s what Sanchez wanted, and was expected to do.

“But he didn’t get a lot of game time, he was used out of position, so when he did play he started to come deeper and deeper to get on the ball, to try and influence the game, and that wasn’t his game.”
