Spanish press REFUSE to rate Adrian's performance after huge Anfield error

Adrian has come in for wide-ranging criticism after his huge error in Liverpool’s Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid – and now the Spanish press have gone in hard on the goalkeeper.

The glovesman, who was playing in place of injured no.1 Alisson, made a big mistake in extra time of the round-of-16 clash, which directly led to Atleti scoring a vital away goal.

Marcos Llorente’s finish put the Spaniards in the driving seat and he added a second eight minutes later to kill off Liverpool completely.

Alvaro Morata’s goal in the dying seconds was the cherry on top for Atleti, who take their place in the quarter-final draw.

With Liverpool 2-0 up and dominating when Llorente scored against the run of play, much of the blame for the Reds’ European exit has been laid on Adrian.

Without his mistake there is a good chance Liverpool would have seen the tie out and remained in the hunt for a second successive European Cup – but, unfortunately for the glovesman, he made a huge error.

Social media was awash with criticism of the keeper after the match while the press also laid into Adrian for his big mistake.

The Spanish press were particularly harsh, it has to be said.

Marca and Sport refused to even grant Adrian a player rating for his performance – with only a dash next to his name.

Only one other player was not scored by the two media outlets – Diego Costa. He was withdrawn from the match after just 56 minutes and reacted furiously, kicking a kit bag and water bottle holder as he left the pitch.

Adrian only joined Liverpool last summer on a free transfer and he was a hero in the early weeks of the season when deputising for Alisson.

However, his recent performances as a starter have been widely criticised, with mistakes made against Atletico and also in the FA Cup defeat by Chelsea earlier this month.

Alisson injured his hip during training last week and has so far missed three matches, with the knock also confirmed to keep him out of Monday’s Merseyside derby at Everton.
