Manchester United and Leeds to defy fears and 'continue training as normal' despite coronavirus threat

The coronavirus may have halted the football season in the UK and across Europe – but Manchester United and Leeds United are determined to carry on with things as normally as possible.

Reports have emerged that Man United and Leeds players will stick to their daily training schedule despite the recent outbreak of COVID-19.

The Daily Mirror reports that the Red Devils will train as normal throughout the enforced suspension despite the coronavirus threat.

Premier League football has been suspended until April 3 at the earliest, meaning teams are vulnerable to the fitness levels of their players dropping off but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will attempt to proceed as normal in case the season resumes.

They were due to travel to Tottenham on Sunday but face a waiting game like the rest of the teams in the top four leagues in England.

“I would like to thank our fans for their tremendous support so far this season and we look forward to welcoming them back to Old Trafford as soon as is safely possible,” said Solskjaer via the club’s website.

Meanwhile, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “While it is disappointing to see the season paused, we recognise there are bigger considerations as part of the need to help slow the spread of coronavirus.”

A meeting will be held between Premier League clubs on Thursday to discuss the plans for the season going forward.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that Marcelo Bielsa will not be giving any of his Leeds players any time off.

The report also claims that Bielsa’s decision to ease the workload on his players is understood to have been questioned by some members of his medical team.

Leeds are currently top of the Championship by a point and reports emerged on Saturday that they could be given promotion to the top flight if the season is completely curtailed by coronavirus.

The Whites have not played in the top flight since they were relegated in 2003/04.
