Eddie Hearn copies UFC president Dana White to preview Mikey Garcia vs Jessie Vargas card

Eddie Hearn says this weekend’s card featuring Mikey Garcia vs Jessie Vargas is probably the biggest card he’s ever done.

The DAZN show in Texas features a host of big names and Hearn decided to do something a little different in the build-up to it.

And the boxing promoter decided to channel UFC president Dana White to do it.

“This is my debut doing this,” the Matchroom chief began.

“I’ve seen Dana White do it and I thought I’d just completely copy his idea. In fact, I do look a little bit like Dana White, but with hair.”

You may or may not have seen how White previews his company’s upcoming events in attempt to promote events even more.

Beginning with ‘What’s up, everybody’, the boss then animatedly talks fans through the fights he is clearly excited for.

White, as the face of the UFC, has taken the company to another level having been installed as president by the Fertitta brothers, who bought the struggling brand for $2m in 2001.

They then sold it for $4bn in 2016.

Hearn, like White, has been across many of boxing’s biggest fights in recent years and was front and centre for Anthony Joshua’s win against Andy Ruiz in 2019, while he was involved in staging the KSI vs Logan Paul YouTube fight.

While this is undoubtedly a big card for Hearn and his team, he should have many more of those on the horizon given the current landscape.

He’ll be sitting down – hopefully – with Britain’s other top promoter, Frank Warren, to arrange a potential Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua super fight.

That will come later, though, as Deontay Wilder is likely to invoke his rematch clause and should Joshua keep defend his titles against Kubrat Pulev in June, the Fury vs Joshua undisputed heavyweight title fight could happen within the next 12 months.

Furthermore, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, arguably the biggest name in the sport today, will be taking on either Callum Smith or Billy Joe Saunders next – both of whom are Hearn clients.

So there is no shortage of big time fights for Hearn to focus on, but can he get them over the line?
