Dana White posts Instagram meme about cursed Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson fight as coronavirus may put UFC 249 in doubt




Dana White shared a meme about the possibility the much-anticipated fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson getting cancelled by the coronavirus outbreak.


If Covid-19 scuppers the fight it will mean the bout is well and truly cursed as it will be the fifth time it has been scrapped.

The two have been due to fight ever since 2015 but freak injuries and illness has scuppered it on four occasions.


Dana White was asked about the possibility of Khabib vs Ferguson being cancelled because of coronavirus at a UFC 249 press conference.


He replied: “When it comes to safety of the athletes and the fans and everything else, no matter where we go or what we do, we’re always concerned.

  • December 11, 2015 – Nurmagomedov suffered a rib injury

  • April 16, 2016 – Ferguson illness (blood/fluid in his lungs)

  • March 4, 2017 – Nurmagomedov pulled out due to weight cut complications

  • April 7, 2018 – Ferguson tripped and fell and tore his knee ligaments


“We’ve been thinking about this for weeks. [UFC] Dr [Jeffrey] Davidson has been involved. I don’t know what else to say other than that.


“We’re not cancelling the event.”


However, White appears to have come round to the possibility that coronavirus may actually put the Khabib vs Ferguson bout at risk.

UFC 249 is scheduled to take place on April 19 but could be at risk of cancellation following several other high profile sporting suspensions in the United States.


The NBA has halted all matches until further notice after a Utah Jazz player tested positive.


The Indian Wells tennis tournament in California has been cancelled while the Miami Open looks likely to follow suit.

Elsewhere in the world, LaLiga and Serie A have both been suspended while the Real Madrid squad will self-isolate for 15 days.


Juventus’ Daniele Rugani is in quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus while teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is currently stuck in Portugal and unable to return to Italy.
