Tottenham were hoping for an instant impact from new signing Steven Bergwijn – and they got it.
Engaged in a battle with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, Spurs were struggling to get out of their own half at points.
A first-half VAR-prompted piece of chaos saw a penalty given and missed, while another spot-kick call was waved away when Hugo Lloris appeared to fell Raheem Sterling.
Just after the hour-mark Oleksandr Zinchenko, who had received a yellow card for his part in a melee after the second penalty decision, was given his marching orders for impeding a rampaging Harry Winks with no attempt to play the ball.
And a corner just moments later allowed Tottenham their first shot on goal of the game and, after a flick from Lucas Moura, Bergwijn chested the ball down and knocked a sweet volley beyond Ederson to make it 1-0.
It got better for Spurs too, despite the Dutchman being forced off with cramp in his calf, as substitute Tanguy Ndombele danced around Rodri and found Heung-Min Son.
The South Korean was in no mood to mess around and struck Spurs’ second shot of the game towards goal.
It took a deflection but still found its way past Ederson and into the back of the net in front of Spurs’ stunning single-tier stand.
Ruthless and efficient from Jose Mourinho’s men as they held on to win 2-0.
