Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has explained why he dropped under-fire goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for the Premier League clash with Leicester.
The Spaniard has come in for heavy criticism following a series of blunders in the top-flight this season.
And the 25-year-old, who is the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, paid the price with his place in the starting XI on Saturday, with Willy Caballero getting the nod between the sticks.
But before the game kicked off, Lampard insisted it wasn’t a decision taken lightly.
“It’s a decision that I make and I th ink with goalkeepers it’s a decision you don’t take lightly because of what it means,” said the Chelsea boss.
“They are very close and they work hard together each day but it’s one that I felt to make for this game,” Lampard added.
“I trust in Willy he trains brilliantly, he’s a great professional. I trust them both but it’s the decision for today.”
The stats make grim reading for Kepa, who has the lowest save percentage of any goalkeeper to play more than 1000 minutes in the Premier League this season.
And Lampard had originally backed his goalkeeper amid questions about his form.
“I am not affected by criticism from the outside as much. I am aware of it, not affected by it, Lampard had said.
“It is what I want for the team and I think with Kepa he knows, he’ll be honest that there have been some mistakes that have cost us goals.
“It is the nature of it, so that needs to improve.”
