Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell make debuts and Kai Havertz starts – How Chelsea should Iine up against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has got a lot to think about this week.

A poor opening performance against Brighton, despite a 3-1 win, and a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool have darkened the mood in west London.

Heading into the campaign, many fans and pundits were getting flustered by the possibility of Lampard building a team most Football Manager players would have been proud of.

Able to splash the cash, he brought in Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr, while Edouard Mendy will soon be added to this list.

So far, though, injuries have meant only the two German stars, Werner and Havertz, have been able to start with the latter struggling to get into either game.

Time is need for his new stars to bed in but Lampard knows, that’s something which works differently when you’re manager of Chelsea.

Results are demanded and he’ll now be putting as much as he can into their Carabao Cup tie with Barnsley – live on talkSPORT 2.

Luckily, Silva and Chilwell should now be able to play a part and a good display will do the club the world of good ahead of Premier League clashes with West Brom, Crystal Palace, and Southampton.

It’s likely a strong team will be fielded and we won’t see the usual smattering of academy stars on the bench though due to coronavirus restrictions.

“It’s eyes on the fitness of the team,” Lampard said. “We are not fit now, I will use it primarily for that. We have the bubble, so we can’t just bring academy players over for the game.”
